In 2016, the National Government submitted an NDC that by 2030, the country's greenhouse emissions would fall by 30 percent compared to 2005 levels. The Labour Government has committed to increase that – after being advised to do so by the Climate Change Commission – but has not outlined a figure.
The Government “hasn’t made any decisions” yet, Shaw says.
The announced NDCs take the world off a worst-case global warming scenario, Shaw says. But we’re still on track for warming of 2.5 degrees Celsius, above the 1.5C and 2C targets in the Paris Agreement.
