Freight industry making moves to decrease emissions

Posted: 16 Apr 2021

The Sustainable Business Council’s (SBC) Freight Group have today launched a plan on how they will decrease their carbon emissions going forward. Nine companies are leading the charge – Countdown, Fonterra, Lyttelton Port Company, New Zealand Post, Ports of Auckland, Swire Shipping, The Warehouse Group, TIL Logistics Group and Toll New Zealand.

The plan involves replacing fossil fuels with biofuels, using current vehicles more efficiently and replacing them with zero carbon vehicles when they were retired.  Hydrogen, biofuels and electric batteries for lighter vehicles are all expected to play a part.  While the plan sets out timetables to help the industry transition in a managed way, it acknowledges the industry will face much higher capital costs for vehicles and higher operational costs, depending which green energy source they move to.  Read more here.
