Act Party leader and acting Prime Minister David Seymour says the Government’s new Paris climate target – panned as shockingly unambitious by critics – is New Zealand’s “minimum viable option”.
Climate Minister Simon Watts had hailed the target as “ambitious and achievable”. The Paris Agreement requires it to represent New Zealand’s “highest possible ambition”. But Seymour concedes the country is actually “doing the minimum” when it promises a 1 to 5 percentage point increase on the previous target.
