Analysis: Don’t get caught up in the hype – there’s a lot of water still to flow under the power line before a high voltage cable linking the Australian and New Zealand electric grids is up and running.
On Tuesday morning, the proposed 2600km Taslink cable made headlines after its Australian and Kiwi backers announced feasibility testing had proved it could, technically, work.
“Over the past two years, we have been disciplined in asking ourselves the question: could this project stand on its own two feet, commercially, even without the addition of public investment? Late last year, we received confirmation that this is possible,” said Richard Homewood, the New Zealand co-director of Taslink and director of Far North Solar.
