New Zealand’s new climate target under the Paris Agreement will require it to cut emissions by just 1 to 5 more percentage points from its existing target.
Climate Change Minister Simon Watts announced the new goal late on Thursday evening, saying it would see New Zealand commit to reducing emissions by 51 to 55 percent below 2005 levels by 2035. The current target, or nationally determined contribution (NDC), is for a 50 percent cut by 2030.
The target is far weaker than those offered by other comparable countries and even developing nations in recent weeks. It comes ahead of a February 10 deadline for all countries to submit new targets for 2035 that go beyond their 2030 commitments.
